The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Risk Management Department – Transaction and Mandate Risk Division at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Risk Analyst / Manager*. This is a full-time position (travel required) at grade 4/5 for which the EIF offers a permanent contract.

Purpose:

Part of the EIB Group, the mission of the European Investment Fund (EIF) is to improve access to finance for SMEs and small mid-caps in Europe. We do this by supporting emerging and established fund managers with equity investments and by designing debt financing instruments that share the risk taken by financial institutions when they lend to or invest in small businesses. We bring this support closer to entrepreneurs through our extensive network of partners and financial intermediaries in all EU Member States and associated countries.

The Equity Risk Analyst/Manager will contribute to the equity risk management activity of the Department and will be required to assess the risk of individual transactions brought forward by EIF’s business lines, opine on any post signature events, attend on-site due diligences and contribute to various projects within the entire EIB Group

Operating network:

You will work within the Equity Risk Unit and will report to the relevant Head of Unit, who in turn reports to the Head of Transaction and Mandate Risk Division. Working in close cooperation with the other Unit/Division members, you will have extensive contacts with colleagues in Risk Management, Front Office, Legal and other departments of the EIB Group.

Responsibilities:

At a level commensurate with your experience and seniority, you will:

  • Assess the risks associated with individual transactions brought forward by EIF’s business lines (i.e. Venture Capital, Lower Midmarket, Private Credit, Infrastructure) and draft respective independent opinions;

  • Perform reviews and provide advice and recommendations on the performance of transactions and recommendations on the performance of transactions and financial intermediaries;

  • Significantly contribute to the independent valuation exercise for EIF’ secondary sales operation;

  • Contribute to the development, improvement, and implementation of best practices, guidelines, procedures and risk management tools (including monitoring tools) suitable for the specific needs and analysis of EIF’s business;

  • Attend on-site Due Diligence together with front office colleagues to perform the risk assessment individual transactions;

  • Contribute to horizontal projects within EIF and across the entire EIB Group; closely follow evolution of the market environment and assist more senior colleagues in providing analytical, research and other professional support as required.

Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years of post-graduation (after having obtained your initial university diploma) relevant professional experience and no more than five (5) at the same level of responsibility in the financial sector or other IFIs;

  • University degree, preferably at post-graduate level, in Finance, Banking, Economics, STEM or related subjects.

  • Any - or combination - of the following would be considered an advantage:

    • Additional professional or academic qualifications (i.e. CFA, CAIA, Ph.D., MBA);

    • Solid proven experience of direct equity and venture capital fund operations (for Venture Capital, Private Equity profiles) is a requirement;

    • Experience in secondary sales, valuations or infrastructure;

  • Knowledge of standard computer tools (mainly in Excel);

Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and drafting skills;

  • Good interpersonal skills for dealing with internal and external contacts;

  • Willingness to quickly learn risk metrics in the context of investments in EIF’s business lines;

  • Ability to manage conflicting deadlines;

  • Sense of initiative and innovation in proposing solutions;

  • Outstanding judgment;

  • Team player.
