The Role

The Group Legal & Compliance team of ArcelorMittal is looking for a Senior Legal Counsel, Sustainability and Environment to provide high-quality legal services to several companies within the ArcelorMittal group.


The Key Responsibilities
  • Developing corporate strategy and support corporate functions on environmental, sustainability, climate change and decarbonization.

  • Providing legal support related to environmental, sustainability, and climate issues, strategies, and projects (for European and international issues) of AM operations and activities in and outside Europe.

  • Protecting and defending business interests in dispute resolution scenarios related to environmental, sustainability, and climate change.

  • Attending internal and external meetings with third-party stakeholders and, where appropriate, assisting directly in negotiation with third parties.

  • Actively supporting international legal initiatives, regularly sharing best practices, new challenges or developments, innovations and efficiency-related projects.

  • Staying up to date on regulatory and legal changes.

  • Negotiating with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers, as well as authorities.

  • Collaborating with other Legal team members and other internal stakeholders dealing with environmental, sustainability and climate issues to exchange on best practices.

  • Developing and delivering legal training to the business and legal teams.

To be successful in this role, you will bring
  • Significant experience in an international law firm and/or as in-house counsel. Experience in industry (either steel, cement, oil & gas) is preferred.

  • Expertise in European and International Environmental Law (knowledge of the EU ETS, the main international treaties, and EU Legal Instruments related to climate change, CCUS, energy, etc.) and/or expertise in main ESG reporting regulations (CSRD, GRI, etc).

  • The willingness to develop a thorough understanding of and familiarity with ArcelorMittal, ArcelorMittals businesses, its people, markets, facilities and customers.

  • The ability to understand priorities and to see the bigger picture, self-reliant, self-responsible, know to seek help when needed.

  • Being a good team player, loyal and transparent is key.

  • The ability to effectively communicate in an international environment, with various stakeholders.

  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of another European language would be an asset.

Preferred locations: Luxembourg, Belgium, Paris, Dunkirk, Hamburg or Berlin.
