The EIB, the European Unions bank, is seeking to recruit for its Projects Directorate (PJ) - Urban and Territorial Development Department (UTD) - Urban Mobility Division (URBMOB), at its headquarters in Luxembourg: TRAINEE

Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 01st September/ 1st October 2024)

Objective of the traineeship

Investment in public transport is the foundation of urban transport climate mitigation. Public transport helps cities reduce carbon emissions, energy consumption and environmental pollution whilst also delivering wider social and economic benefits including supporting access to employment, health and education for all, including women. The EIB’s urban mobility division focuses on providing technical due diligence and advisory support for projects seeking to improve public transport provision in cities inside and outside of the EU.

There are two key components of the technical due diligence in the urban mobility sector which are relevant for this traineeship. The first one relates to capturing the contribution and impact of investments in public transport towards important policy goals such as gender equality and womens economic empowerment. The second one relates to the benchmarking of expenditure of infrastructure and rolling stock investments.

Hence, the objectives of the traineeships are to:
  • understand the link between policy goals such as gender equality and decarbonisation and how investments in public transport contribute towards them
  • understand key investment policies and how they drive the decision making process
  • understand wider interdependencies with other components of the technical due diligence work
  • bring a new perspective and improve the existing in-house analytical tools
Responsibilities

As a trainee you will be responsible for:

  • undertaking desktop research and analysis of potential indicators linked to the contribution of public transport investments to gender equality and womens economic empowerment by closely collaborating with senior sector experts in charge of the workstream;
  • undertaking the update of the urban mobility cost benchmarking database by closely collaborating with sector experts in charge of project appraisal
  • propose and agree the implementation of new indicators, functionalities and generally improve the existing in-house tools for the two policy areas in question
Academic qualifications and professional skills
  • Final year of studies or university degree preferably but not limited to Economics, Transport Planning, Development Economics/Studies, Urban Planning, Urban Development.
  • Experience in the use of indicators and reporting would be an advantage.
  • Ability to use analytical and statistical tools would be an advantage.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools and in particular Excel and Excel Dashboards.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
